創作,可教不可教?

 

在大學執教「創意寫作課」逾十年,不時被問及(或自問)的一個問題:「寫作,可以教的嗎?」如果全然否定,教學當然無從說起。比較普遍的回應是:寫作,有「可教」(如技巧)與「不可教的」(如「靈性」)部分。但如果不滿足此二分,將問題探問下去,或可觸及寫作更根本的假設和面相,諸如:寫作(至藝術創作的層次)到底屬少數被「選定」的「創意天才」(creative genius)還是民主化的大眾?何謂創意?原創性(originality)背後的價值判斷如何?寫作經驗可以(或應該被)傳授的嗎?寫作除了個人天賦展現一面,集體合作或勞動性的一面又應如何看待?而除了是或否的答案之外,或者更可問及的是:將創意寫作納入教學,寫作學習的歷程、習性、出來的作品等,在學員身上會發生甚麼變化?研討會中講者潘國靈試圖從這基本說起。

Can Creative Writing Be Taught?

 

I have been asked (or self-questioning) from time to time in my teaching career in the academy for over a decade: "Can writing be taught?" If the answer is no, then we can just reject such efforts from the very beginning. The more common response is: for writing, there are parts that are "teachable" (such as skills) and "un-teachable" (such as "spirituality"). But if you are not satisfied with this dichotomy, we can ask about more fundamental assumptions and aspects of writing, such as: Is writing (to the level of artistic creation) a privilege limited only to very few "geniuses" who are "chosen," or does it belong to the democratic public? What is creativity? What is the value judgment behind “originality”? Can writing experiences be taught (or should they be?) How should we discuss collective writing and the aspect of labour in writing? Instead of a yes or no answer, what are the consequences of incorporating creative writing into the classroom, what is brought to the students through the process in which they develop writing habits and produce certain kind of works? These are the speaker’s starting points for discussion.
